Afternoon Tea at The Cedar Court Grand Hotel, York

I booked afternoon tea at The Cedar Court Grand in York to celebrate a weekend away for Valentines day. I searched online for afternoon tea venues in York and The Cedar Court Grand came top of the review list. I think it was probably the fact it is the only five star hotel in York that swung it for me....

We arrived at the hotel at 2pm and were greeted by concierge in top hat and tails and made our way through to the Grill Room. The waiting staff led us to our table, took our coats and talked us through the menu in a rather formal yet pleasant style five star style. We both opted for the traditional afternoon tea option (£19.95 each) without champagne and selected the Assam and English breakfast tea.

There were plenty of other diners taking afternoon tea; couples, families, hen parties, birthday parties and everyone seemed just as impressed by the presentation of the tea stands with camera phones busily snapping away.

Compared to other afternoon tea venues The Cedar Court Grand is certainly up there with the most formal with one feeling like one ought to drink tea from the cup with one's pinky in the air.

The tea itself was served in pristine and heavy silver teapots. The food was served on a three tier stand with cakes on the top, warm scones in the middle and sandwiches at the bottom. The scones came with clotted cream and an assortment of jams. All of the food was beautiful and fresh apart from a couple of the cakes which were dry. We were too full to eat them so didn't ask for them to be changed.

All in all this was a fabulous afternoon tea experience which was good value for money at £19.95 each. I have since paid £25 at The Grosvenor Hotel in Chester to show how the price compares. Here are a few other photos including one of me doing my best pinky up impression.
